After 40+ years in the wire machinery world, I offer an observation - of the two wire "draw plates" on the front left side of the workbench for a few seconds at 40:10 in the film. Wire was manually pulled through successively smaller holes in these plates to make just one of the components in the clocks. Consider the work required to obtain each of the other components and it's not hard to understand why construction of a prototype took so many years.
