I find it hard to believe that there was possibly a proof of heliocentrism available to Galileo. If someone can recall such a proof please post.
Absent any understanding of Newton's ideas governing the motions of bodies one could always suppose that deus ex machina causes the observations to be due to a stationary earth and moving celestial bodies.
