I have often thought that an underwater bell near to the entrance to an 'enclosed' waterway would be a useful navigtion aid for whales and other cetaceans. In particular I think of Farewell Spit, New Zealand, (S40.5 E172.8) where Pilot Whale strandings are, alas, not uncommon. Does this happen in the Chesapeake too?
