    Unusual Sun
    From: David C
    Date: 2019 Dec 31, 22:53 -0800

My wife told me to look outside at the sun. It was a yellow disc with a very sharp edge. There is high cloud. Usually when I see the sun in misty weather the image is fuzzy. This was very sharp and I could look at it and take a photo without shades. 20 minutes  later the image was still very sharp but was red.

I wonder if smoke from the Australian bush fires is creating a filter?  Smoke is covering the South Island and it may have made its way north.  It is as though I am looking hrough my sextant with a shade down.

If the sun's altitude had been higher mabe I should have got out my AH and taken a sight?

Sun's alt by phone app  14.5 degrees

    Azimuth 252 degrees

Will keep an eye on the sun tomorrow and maybe (carefully) take some sights without shades.
