For me it was variation in the Cubs, variation in the Scouts, variation at school, variation in the Air Cadets and variation in the RAF, so when I first saw the word magnetic declination used, I assumed it must mean magnetic dip. Well it sounds like it ought to be that – doesn’t it? Besides, using declination would really muck up all those CDMVT mnemonics, rude or otherwise. It was only when sentences began not to make sense that I decided to check up what it really meant. Still you can do worse. Be honest now, how many of you have ever tried to work a conveniently angled variation line into a three position line fix if the cut was just right? DaveP
