The maximum altitude of venus at 41°S in April is about 26°. The dec is currently about 23°N heading for a maximum 27° N in May. Maybe I should wait until December when it will be at its maximum southerly point? Today the altitude of venus does not matter - the sky is covered with thick cloud.
I am sure that I am looking in the correct direction because on several occasions I have seen the planet through binoculars. The problem is that it appears briefly and then disappears never to be seen again.
