David - might it have been the International Space Station? To check, you could go to heavens-above.com, set your location, and then from the main page, click on "ISS" under the heading "10-day predictions for satellites of special interest." You may need to click on the "Passes to include all" radio button to see a table of passes. If there's a pass for today that brackets your time of observation, click on it and see if the track on the sky chart corresponds to what you observed.
