The weather forecast is good for tomorrow and I am hoping that a 5year old will be able to tell her teacher that she has seen mars. I plan to go outside between 6am and 7am tomorrow local time to check and if neccessary phone instructions.
Success! It was an ideal morning for viewing Mars and Venus. My grandaughters have seen them both.
Because of light pollution I rarely look at the stars. This morning I saw Orion, the Cross and Sirius. If I had taken the tablet ouitside with the Nautical Almanac open I probably could have identified many of the navigational stars. But it was cold so I didn't. It is moments like this when I wish that I had a bubble sextant. I could have done a Mars - Venus - multi star fix. Two weeks ago I could have included the Moon as well.
