    Frank,

    I think a chronometer is something more specific than a good clock. Very good clocks go by a number of names. Quartz clocks, observatory clocks, atomic clocks and so oon.

    For several centuries, clocks like the one pictured below were the most accurate portable clock in existance and were called "chronometers". At the risk of being shot down, I will be bold and say that no other type of clock, other than the marine chronometer acually went by the generic name of a "chromometer".
