Some advice please. Those advocating second hand Russian, German and Japanese classics. How do you judge the quality from an eBay advert? Has it been dropped etc? Those who have bought one, please advise on return agreements and deals if found to be not perfect after all. I am interested in a good classic English sextant such as a Kelvin Hughes. Not really to use instead of my Astra which is more than adequate for me. More an irrational romantic collecting urge to have one! There is little objective logic in owning sextants, boats, old telescopes, slide rules, old books, vintage 1950s British motorcycles and Exakta cameras, but I do. Like collecting any form of art. More emotion than sense.(occasionally I am sensible. My $100 Invicta watch looks and performs like a Rolex Submariner ($6-12000). I can never afford or justify that. Even if I lust after one. My dive skipper friend has one, but he never dives with it. Far too precious!)) A couple of cheap smart phones with GPS will do a much better job. But they won't feed your soul! Best wishes Francis
