More info -- apparently they had planned to go around the Cape of
Good Hope rather than through the Panama Canal, so they were heading
for South Africa rather than Panama, hence their SE course.

Not only did those sailors leave on the wrong date, they also went the wrong way. How could they end up 190 nm SE of Cape Cod when they should have been headed SW? At least we can say the one good thing about them that they were not stricken by trackline attachment syndrome!
