I've been investigating an 1880's camera collection and found the item below. I checked with a vintage photography expert who did not recognise it. It looks like some sort of portable Sundial and I thought it might be used to measure exposure. There may be a missing attachment. Maybe it's just to line the camera up with the Sun? In short, I'd like to ID it and if this group can't do that who can?! This may or may not be off-topic in which case sorry but do seem to get unidentified instruments from time to time.
