Thanks, Greg. I did a little Internet searching on the phrase "time hack". It's somewhat rare, but it seems that the meaning in most cases is nearly the same as "time check" -and that would fit John Howard's examples: lunars were a "time check" and a shortwave signal is a "time check". Does that sound about right?
