I thought that (cheap at least) quartz watches were more consistent if kept at a constant temperature. My wrist is the closest thing I have to a stable temperature on board! I would be interested if any careful experiments have been done on this. Maybe the next best temperature standard is fastened to the hull inside!

Correction: the oven controlled crystal oscillator in my Icom 801 radio is the best stable temperature environment I have. But we are assuming that was destroyed by lightning.
