Subject: [World Magnetic Model] WMM2015 degraded performance warning -- March 2018
To: geomagnetism <geomagnetism@list.woc.noaa.gov>
Dear World Magnetic Model users,
This is a message from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly National Geophysical Data Center).
We would like to bring to your attention that WMM Gridded Variation (GV) error has recently exceeded the WMM performance specification in the Arctic region. Other geographic areas and other model parameters are not affected. This performance degradation is caused by fast-changing core flows in the North polar region of the Earth’s outer core. We invite your feedback on potential impacts and whether an out-of-cycle WMM update would benefit your operations.
More details in the attached white paper. Additional information is available from WMM website. Questions and comments may be addressed to geomag.models@noaa.gov
