Only somewhat related but I seem to remember that Marvin Creamer who sailed around the world without instruments used to sight along the mast for latitude...a zenith fix if every there was one. The podcast that Greg Rudzinski originally posted here no longer works but now can be found here. There is also a short Youtube video.
