Here is a little bit more for you to chew on. Attached is a sample Sun artificial horizon observation done this morning using a US Navy mark 3 M.Low split mirror sextant. A 35mm DSLR camera was used to image in place of the sight tube. A trick that I like to use with AH and split mirrored sextants is to have a very bright reflected Sun in the horizon mirror then shift the Sun over to the clear left side overlapping the direct Reflected Sun. This effectively converts the split mirror into a whole horizon mirror making the observation a little easier.
