This is the first problem of the new Silicon Sea circumnavigation cruise. We
will pick up the cruise at our last stop in Palma de Mallorca. And continue
the circumnavigation East About. Our fastest way back to Boston, our home
port. We will pass through the Red Sea and across the Indian Ocean. Around
Cape Leeuwin and through the Bass Straits for a stop at Sydney Australia.
Then it will be around Cape Horn and up the Atlantic to Boston. All times
will be in GMT unless otherwised noted.

Dead-Reckoning problem Leg 10 100596 Test your knowledge!
---------------------- ------ ------ --------------------

Leg 10 is our departure from Palma de Mallorca(39d 34'N 2d 39'E). Homeward
bound. We have been lollygagging around Palma too long. An angry EMail
arrives from the skipper's SO. "Finish your voyage or suffer the
consequences." In a flurry of activity we finish our work on the boat,
re-provision and set a date for out departure. Sunrise 10/05/96. We plan
on using as our departure point the Isla Horadada Light (39d 10.3'N 2d 50.6'E).

1) What is the the time of sunrise at Palma de Mallorca?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------

2) What is the Dist and TC to the defined departure point?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------

3) What is the time of our arrival at the departure point, at a speed of 6
    Kts?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------------

As we approach our departure point we plan for our exodus from the
Mediterranean. We plot a course to Port Said, Egypt. In order to clear
Ra's aT Tib ( aka. Cap Bon), on the coast of Tunisia, we lay for a point
at the entrance to the Strait of Sicily(38d 30.3'N 10d 42'E) which is
between Tunis and Sicily.

4) What is the TC and Dist to the point at the entrance to the Strait of
    Sicily from Isla Horadada Light?
-- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

At this time of year there is approximately 14 hours and 13 minutes of
daylight. Our Speed increases to 7 Knots as we come out from the
protecting of Mallorca and Isla Horadada.

5) What is the estimate of the time of Sunset?
-- -------------------------------------------

6) What is our estimated position at the time of sunset? What is the Dist
   from Isla Horadada?
-- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is our first night at sea and there are still numerous adjustments,
and settling in to do, we skip doing Sight Reduction for the night. Some
passage makers don't start Celestial Navigation for two or three days
after departure. Our Skipper is not one of those.

Note:
Lat & Lo = XXd XX.X', Date=DD/MM/YY, HE 8 Feet, Index correction -.2',
Time hh-mm-ss in UTC/GMT. Silicon Sea is a medium displacement sailing
vessel, 40 Feet LOA. 38 Feet LWL; Cutter rigged. Looks a lot like a
Mason.
