Dead-Reckoning problem Leg 15 061996 Test your knowledge!
---------------------- ------ ------ --------------------
During our day passage we spoke with a West bound yacht. We were told the
the best approach to Valletta Harbor on Malta is to from North of the
island via the Malta Channel. Also that a Notice to Mariners says that the
Gozo Island light(36d 00.8'N 14 15.1'E) NW of Malta is not functioning.
Gozo Island is 145 Meters high.

At 19-50-30 15/05/1996 we take a 3 body sight that fixes our position at
36d 22.8'N 13d 50.4'E. We decide to change course for Gozo
Island.

1) What is the TC to Gozo Island?
    What is the Distance?
-- ------------------------------

2) Gozo Island is 145 Meters high at what distance should we be
    able to sight it?
-- ------------------------------------------------------------

3) At the time of our FIX did we have Malta in sight?
What was the distance to Malta?
-- --------------------------------------------------

With the light at Gozo Island(36d 00.8'N 14 15.1'E) inoperative, we
want to clear the Island to the *WEST* by 4 miles. Current .5 Set 35d.
1dW Var, 4d E Dev. Speed 8 Kts.

4) From our FIX what is the CC to clear Gozo island?
    What is the SMG?
-- ------------------------------------------------

5) To the nearest minute what is the ETA for our arrival abeam of
    Gozo Island light?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------

As we approach Gozo Island we take a bearings at 26.5d and another at 45d,
the run between the bearings is 6 mi.

6) What will be the distance off when we are abeam of Gozo Island?
-- ---------------------------------------------------------------

7) What is the name of this procedure?
Can you name 4 other simular methods?
-- -------------------------------------

It is approximately 28 miles from our position abeam of Gozo Island
to Valletta Harbor.

8) At 7.8 Kts what is our ETA, to the nearest minute, at Valletta Harbor?
-- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

9) What is the best time to arrive at a new harbor?
What is the traditional flags flown when entering a new
    port?
-- -------------------------------------------------------
