Dead-Reckoning &
Pilotage problem Leg 23 260397 Test your knowledge!
----------------- ------ ------ --------------------

Our last FIX was 03:52:10 @ 06/06/1996 (31d 39.1'N 30d 39.9'E). At a
speed of 9.9 Kts. Our landfall is Masabb Dumyat.

1) What is the TC and distance from our last fix to Masabb Dumyat
    (31d 30.1'N 31 50.0'E)?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------

Our Cruising Guide tells us that the coast at Masabb Dumyat is 445.4*
meters high.

2) At what ZT is sunrise at Masabb Dumyat.
-- ---------------------------------------

3) To the nearest minute, at what ZT can we expect to sight land?
-- --------------------------------------------------------------

On sighting land we make a turn to Port and follow the coast line. At
08:28ZT we round the headland and set a TC 134d to Port Said (31d 15.0'N.
32d 15,8'E). By our chart we estimate it is 45 miles sailing to reach the
entrance. Due to shifting wind our speed drops to 7 Kts. Current is 0.5 kts,
set 274d, Var. 1dE, Dev 4dE.

4) What is the Compass Course Made Good(CCMG) and Speed Made Good(SMG) to
    Port Said?
-- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Using our SMG what is the ETA (Estmated Time of Arrival) at
the entrance to Port Said, in ZT to the nearest minute?
-- -----------------------------------------------------------

As we near the area out side Port Said we find it congested with
numerous anchored ships.

6) Would you continue sailing or motor?
    Why?
-- ------------------------------------

7) What is the time of Sunset(SS) at Port Said
    (31d 15.0'N 32d 15.8'E)?
-- --------------------------------------------

Because of the high density of traffic it is not reccomended that small
vessels enter Port Said at night and they are not permitted to transit the
Suez Canal at night. In addition only a 24 hour layover is permittrd yachts
in transit. Anyone intending to go ashore in Egypt must obtain a tourist visa
at Port Said. We make contact with the boat from our shipping agent. He
escorts us into the Fouad Yacht Club.

This concludes or Mediterranean passsage. Leg 24 will contain the
transit of the Suez Canal and our arrival at Port Suez.

* This is a ficticious height.
