Herman Dekker died a few days ago. He learned in December that he was afflicted by a fast, aggressive cancer. I exchanged a number of emails with him in the past six weeks, and he reminded me how much he enjoyed NavList discussions. Herman contributed 249 messages over the past nine years, and his very first was about HO 249, a nice numerical coincidence. Here's an index of all of his NavList posts:

Herman also attended most of my online celestial navigation workshops in the past four years, and I know some of you chatted with him during those sessions. He was fascinated by all aspects of celestial navigation.
