In nights of old, when monks were bold

Following on from our recent interest in moonshots.  Suppose I was a Medieval Monk on the night shift in a monastery in St Albins or Frosty Northumberland, England, and I was lucky enough to witness a planet going behind the Moon.  How might I use this to further scientific knowledge or help me say my prayers on time.  I know there’s a book which might tell me, but as I’ve mentioned before, I can’t remember if I’ve loaned it to someone or offered it as a raffle prize.  DaveP
