    Way cool! Your post sent me scurrying to Google Image search which led me to this wikipedia entry for what seems to be the TV program, "Steptoe and Son", which as the wiki entry notes was inspiration for Sanford and Son!

    All of which also explains why the glaring error of the sextant lacking a scope - the sophisticated British audience of the timw would have immediately noted its absence and taken it in as part of the comedy.
