Doug, Spica is indeed one of the original lunar stars. As long as the moon's 20 degrees away, things should be OK. 40 would be better, depending upon conditions. I think it highly appropriate that Spica be the target of your first shipboard lunar with a Tamaya Spica sextant. On your other post, I have heard those telescopes with the two wires referred to as "alignment telescopes" by John M. Luykx. He is a retired Navy navigator, and has written for the navigator's newsletter. His website is http://www.paxp.com/mac/navtrak/index.html. You might enjoy conversing with him. I certainly did. Now your post explains what the wires are for and why it's called an alignment telescope. Thanks. Keep up the good work! Fred
