I am trying to compile the mathematical background to the 18th cent. lunar distance evaluation, in particular, the system developed by Nevil Maskelyne. I've got so far but have now hit something of a wall because I can't replicate the tables used. Mayer's 1770 description is in latin (which I am not familiar with) but I suspect may be of use. I've trawled the Royal Society proceedings and tried the RGO archives but there seems little in the way of mathematical description. Steven Wepster's book and thesis have much good information but I don't know whether the necessary data exists. The tables were, I suspect, somewhat empirical and were modified according to observation so I may never get there. Any thoughts, suggestions etc would be much appreciated.
Very Best Regards,
Geoff South
