Dan Allen has supplied some interesting information about the history of Nav-L. I have a few comments- 1. It's interesting to learn who has been contributing the longest, and who has contributed the largest number, but it's a pity that there's no way of assessing the QUALITY, rather than the quantity, of the postings. Mentioning no names, there are certain posters who may contribute rarely; but when they do, I can be certain that what they have to say will always be relevant, interesting, to-the-point, and right; that they will always hit the nail on the head. There are others, it's true (mentioning no names again), who can be relied-on to hit those nails squarely on the thumb, but in their own way they contribute to the variety of Nav-L, and I for one welcome their contributions, which do a lot to stir us all up. 2. Nav-L is in some ways like a swimming duck, progressing placidly along above the surface, but with a lot of unseen commotion going on down below. I judge that there's a lot of off-list activity happening unseen, as listmembers recognise others with similar interests, with a lot of help and information being freely proferred and exchanged, to everyone's advantage. And, no doubt, a bit of misinformation in the mix, to be filtered out! There are friendships being made too, and I am grateful to the list for introducing me to many interesting characters, who I now think of as much more than just fellow listmembers. ========== Inevitably, age will take its toll, and older members will drop out. Perhaps, that's what "the last post" might come to imply... As long as others come in to take their place, Nav-l will continue to thrive, as it seems to be doing at present.. I gain a lot from being a member of our little Nav-L community, and no doubt others feel the same. I wonder if other mailing lists work quite so well. May it, and may we, continue for many years yet. And thanks to Dan Hogan for providing a forum and a playpen, and letting us get on with it.
