    Re: A-10 Sextant Maintenance Manual

The procedure is essentially as Jean-Phillipe has outlined, but I
would strongly suggest you do not attempt to remove the lead washer
beneath the top lens(unless it drops out of its own accord) and also
bear in mind that xylene causes most types of rubber to swell and
deteriorate. When necessary to replace broken sealing washers in
bubble sextants I use thin soft nylon sheet and use a pair of needle
point spring bow dividers to cut out a washer. You also really need to
open the brass reservoir chamber to clean inside it. This may neeed
considerable force after sixty years, so put the unit in a vice with
soft jaws and use a one inch box spanner on the nut. Pray and then
apply brute force. There is a gasket beneath the nut that has to be
wangled out, using a thin blade to capsize it and then a little hook
on the end of a bit of thin piano wire to fish it out. Once cleaned,
fill it 2/3rds full with xylene(from decorating shops NZ$16/litre) and
reassemble. Fill the bubble chamber with xylene and twiddle the
adjusting knob back and forth until no more bubbles appear. Overfill
the chamber and replace bits as per Jean-Phillipe's instructions.

e-mail me at engineer@clear.net.nz if you would like the full manual
    and bubble repair instructions.
