All you need is your fingers. The "spider" with the three pins is on a
light spring loaded rachet with respect to the positioning pin on the
central shaft. Just lift the spider outward, away from the sextant, and
rotate to the correct position.

Not a problem I have had with either of my two A-12 sextants (or rather,
octants). Do you have a manual? Sounds like you may have to dis-assemble
the index arm assembly and free off the shades.
