Sean, on my iBook G4, Shift-option-* gives the degree symbol. On the iPad it's Shift-*.

Thanks Sean It worked, but what a kluge! Mostly a Mac user, so amazed there is no symbol font, and the hoops one has to jump through to get a simple symbol. Bill B
