I've been wondering whether some people may have taken AP to be a generic term since (as it appears to me as an observer of exchanges on NavList) that most have learned cel nav using sight reduction methods that require an Assumed Position.

If this is correct, then using AP as the generic term is quite understandable, if potentially confusing to those who appreciate the differences between AP, DR and EP.

If a generic term is needed, then I would suggest EP (Estimated Position) would probably be best, although choosing the appropriate term for the situation would, it seems to me, be preferable.
