There's no problem sending it as attachment if it's really something of
general interest. You yourself have sent hundreds of thousands of bytes to the
list as attachments in the past couple of months. If there's something really
HUGE, then put it on a web site instead of attaching it. There are dozens of
people on the list, including myself, with hundreds of megabytes of spare
storage available. We don't need a separate "facility" for this.
On a general note, just use ordinary etiquette when deciding whether to
send something as an attachment. If it's going to interest many people, go ahead
and send it. No one will complain. If it's just bandwidth-wasting, then
don't do it. Also, if you're not really computer-savvy, consider asking around
about how to save your file in an efficient space-saving format before sending
it. For example, there was an image sent to the list in September that occupied
nearly 1 megabyte in the format as sent. This files could easily have been
compressed down to as little as 17 kilobytes (2% of its size as sent!) with a
change in format.
This list, both as NavList and Navigation-L, has seen dozens of fascinating
attachments over the past five years. I've gone to some considerable effort to
make all of these visible in the new list archive at www.fer3.com/arc . PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT
the same as the google page for the group. Rather, this is a comprehensive
archive of all messages hosted on a separate web site. It is also now
continuously updated with messages appearing there just a minute or two after
posting to the list. There's a relatively easy way to explore some of the
attachments which have been sent during the past five years. Go to each month
and click to sort by "message size" so that the largest messages are at the top
(doesn't work for August, September 2006). Anything larger than 15000 bytes has
a 50/50 chance of including an attachment. There may still be a couple that
don't display correctly. Please let me know if you find any.
