Byron:The ship height of eye, or the sun/body 1/2 or 2/3 will give near the same decimal bearing. In deep water who cares! The Amplitude in high Lat. is less accurate agreed, than lower Lat, but I will best the Azimuth Circle, using the bearing circle. I have in the past, checked the gyro using my "Franklin Piloting Technique" of many ships after they were set up in the yards by yard workers, using the Azimuth Circle. It is a waste of time and money. The Azimuth
Circle is needed at sea (when there are no Navaids) to take bearing on in order to check the compass accuracy. I would not use the Azimuth correction for taking bearings in hazardous waters. Use my Franklin Piloting technique.
