Re: Ageton method and HO 211?

    Samuel,

If you are interested in playing with HO 211 or any of its derivatives, or most of the more popular "old" methods (Weems Line of Position is not included), the SR Methods tool of Celestial Tools provides an easy way to check your work.

The methods included are the Law of Cosines (LoC) calculator method, the Nautical Almanac Concise method (NASR),
Pub. 249 Volumes 2 and 3 (formerly H.O. 249, Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation), Pub. 229 (formerly H.O. 229, Sight Reduction Tables for Marine Navigation),
H.O. 214 (Tables of Computed Altitude and Azimuth), H.O. 211 (Dead Reckoning Altitude and Azimuth Table, Third Edition, known as Ageton, and the
Modified H.O. 211 Compact Sight Reduction Table, known as Ageton-Bayless), H.O. 208 (Navigation Tables for Mariners and Aviators, Sixth Edition,
known as Dreisonstok), and two versions of the S-Table (Mike Pepperday's original and Rodger Farley's modification).

For HO 211 where the LHA is near (but not exactly) 90º or 270º there is the option to use the Sadler technique.

    Stan

Subject: [NavList] Ageton method and HO 211?

I've reviewed the Ageton method using HO 211 and it seems very agreeable in procedure and usage. Also, having a smaller amount of necessary pages to refer to and carry around is attractive.
What are the drawbacks to using HO 211 (Ageton's method) in determing a fix compared to using HO 249 for sight reductions?
    Sam
