I've flown with my sextant & books & sailing gear many times since 9/11. the nice men are always interested to see the sextant and they seem to understand how delicate it is. bottom line: not a problem at all to carry-on. ask me about checking the CO2 inflating type V PFD, and the EPIRB! that's more trouble.
