I used two catalogues when I wrote my star almanac; "Star List 2000" by Richard Dibon-Smith and "Sky Catalogue 2000.0, Vol 1: Stars to Magnitude 8.0". Star List catalogues the stars by constellation (alpha Gem, beta Gem, ...), and by HD (Henry Draper Catalogue number). There are footnotes giving the names of the named stars (Castor, Pollux, ...). The proper motions are given by speed and direction. Sky Catalogue list the stars by HD (128620) and gives the SAO (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Catalogue) number (252838), star name (alpha cen.), and in the notes column (Rigel Kentaurus).
