With all due respect, I don't really see what difference it makes. I receive lots of e-mail from various sources and with the usual mish mash of formula signature appendages. The allegiances appended to Mr. Harkins' e-mail have not distracted me one iota from the topic at hand: navigation. Nor have they caused me any offence. To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Harkin has never attempted to force these topics upon us in any of his messages: all of his messages have been about navigation. I see no difference between that, and a person who signs his or her name with "PhD" or "P.Eng". or with an university or professional affiliation. Much ado about nothing I'd say. Please, let us restrict our nit picking to matters of navigation and not about how the list members choose to sign their names.
