    Your discussion of the JPL work on planetary ephemerides reminds me of my
    first spacecraft, Mariner 2 to Venus in 1962. The JPL deep space network
    had just completed a radar bounce off Venus, to increase the precision of
    the astronomical unit so that we could make a close approach to the
    planet. Without that, the mission would not have been possible.
