Meanwhile, an article entitled "Sail the oceans using iPhone apps" turned up just now online: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/12/04/DD0S1ATU55.DTL It references Philippe Kahn who just a couple of years ago I quoted on NavList for saying that "a sextant is cooler than an iPhone" or words to that effect. Now he's writing iPhone apps to enhance his sailing adventures! The article also mentions using a nautical almanac app (which I could easily imagine being exact in every way) with a 99 cent "sextant app".
