Re: Amelia Earhart commemoration: June 4, Noank

On June 4, 2010, a number of the members of NavList presented a plaque in Noank Connecticut commemorating the wedding of Amelia Earhart to George Putnam on February 7, 1931 that took place in the house owned by her soon-to-be mother-in-law in Noank. Here is  link to an article in Conneticut Magazine mentioning this commemoration and quoting our own Frank Reed.

I found this link on the TIGHAR website.

I was there demonstrating the same type of sextant that was being use by Amelia Earhart's navigator, Fred Noonan, on the flight from Lae to Howland island on which they disappeared. It was a good turn out and many seemed quite interested in the use of the sextant.

The story doesn't quite get it right as to why the plaque was not put on the actual house but was placed at the Noank historical society instead. Frank wanted to put it on the house but the owner wouldn't allow us to because he thought that if the plaque was on his house the assesor would re-appraise his house and his property taxes would be raised.

This Friday at 6:00pm in front of the Noank Historical Society museum at 17 Sylvan Street in Noank, Connecticut, the "navigators of NavList" (you're all in on this for free!) will be presenting a commemorative plaque to the village of Noank celebrating Amelia Earhart's connection to Noank. This site is two miles south of Mystic Seaport where the "Navigation Weekend" will be taking place June 4 and 5. This will be a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony from 6:00pm-6:30pm. Open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Local media will be present. :)
