    Frank,

Ref your question. Almost exactly 20 years ago I was working for a Chinese shipping company, but also  had access to a Tiger Moth biplane.

Two of us took off, and climbed through a hole in the cloud.  It started to get dark, but we had sufficient equipment, including torches and watches, but no sextant. After reaching 10,000’ I managed to get a 2 PL CN fix, and about 10 minutes later, another.

With a good position, returning to land was routine.  I submitted a report to the company, and it was translated, part of which .is reproduced here.

      What was going on?

    Brian Walton
