How about using a piece of rope to determine the height of the Conestoga wagon I was traveling in. Park the wagon south of my position. Use the rope to establish my eye height at the same height of the wagon. Do a noon sun sighting bringing the sun down to the wagon top.

It seems more likely that a small piece of flat ground is available than a couple of miles of flat ground. If I had been prudent enough to bring a spirit level there would be other options.

I haven't done this but I have considered erecting a rail at eye height and using it for a horizon. I am a novice so I may be overlooking something obvious.
