This is an "Astronomisches Rechengert" made by Zeiss during WW II. You can find a detailed description by David Charlwood in the "Navigator's Newsletter" No. 76 (Summer 2002), p. 10 - 19. Its successor, the ARG 3, was still manufactured in East Germany in the 60s and its use taught in the standard East German manual. The price of the item on ebay is outrageous in my opinion; a similar item went for less than 200 Euros a year or 2 ago (though that was underprized, I think). If you want to have a look at one visit the Royal Navy Submarine Collections (shelf No. Q35/27/84). The NMM also owns one, but it is in storage. By the way, whatever happened to the Navigator's Newsletter? The last issue I received was "Spring 2008" and never heard anything afterwards. Not looking to buy it, just understand it. cheers Roger the ebay blurb is below: Here's a rare 100% genuine WWII German ARG-1 (Astronomisches Rechengerat 1) celestial navigation instrument by Carl Zeiss Jena. This late 1940's war issue was first used by the Luftwaffe, then after naval trials, adopted for use in German U-boats. This instrument is part of a collection whose history suggests it was removed from the long-range U-boat type IXD Ex-German U-873 that had surrendered to US Naval Forces sometime in 1945. The celestial computer is in excellent used condition and is 100% original. Its body is of Bakelite construction and its original electrical cord is attached. It has an illuminated glass screen and there are four original bulbs located in a small storage compartment within the original storage box (see picture). The microscope eyepiece with adjustable cross hair is in great shape as pictured. The box is sturdy in all respects however its age wear is apparent in the pictures provided. There are two original paper labels affixed to the inside of the box as shown. Please note the small storage compartment that houses the four bulbs as mentioned earlier. There is no manual or operating instructions in this sale. The ARG-1 instrument has not been tested. Please review the pictures provided for condition. ------------------------------------------------- [Sent from archive by: rkputty-AT-westnet.com.au] --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
