Here is more info on my AH.

Yes the brass domed nut is "foreign". It covers the 1/32 " +/- diameter hole in the funnel. If the surveyor lost the plug that goes into the jug, the cap would minimize spillage of the Hg . The funnel and jug are ferrous metals. I removed the funnel top and moved away from the jug. My compass indicates it is definitely an iron/steel.

Based on the roughness of the jug and funnel I first thought it all was cast iron. But then I wondered if cast iron can be threaded so finely. Also the inside of the funnel is quite polished. Now I think the funnel at least is steel...maybe cast?

The height of the triangular hood at the peak is about 4.75 inches. The outside dimensions of the carrying box are: 8 1/2 inches across the front (ouside to outside); 6 inches front to back; and 6.25 inches high.

The total height of the jug with the foreign cap is about 5 inches. Bottom diameter of jug is 2.75 inches. Based on the rim of the jug, the jug wall thickness might be as much as 1/4"....heavy duty! The basin is 3.23x 6.5 inches (nominal outside). Its pool depth is about 0.5". I assume there is about 1/8" additional freeboard for handling and Hg sloshing around.

Still hoping someone out there knows what the missing pieces" look like".

Thank you for posting these interesting images. What please are the diameter and height of the bottle?

It is difficult to identify the materials. Some of the parts seem to be made of a yellow metal, but I would expect everything to be made of cast iron or steel, since many other metals and alloys are soluble in mercury.

I suspect the brass domed nut is a "foreigner" and it would probably be safest to have the missing transition piece machined from cast iron or steel.
