    Re: Astra IIIb: First Impressions

Today I had my first opportunity to use a natural horizon with my Astra. I was very pleased with the results.

I checked the index error using the horizon and a nearby bridge (the James River Bridge.) Then I shot several Sun sights. I used the outermost (grey) horizon shade and the three outermost index shades. The horizon appeared as a sharply defined line and I found it quite easy to bring the Sun down to meet it. Unfortunately, I neglected to bring pen and paper, but I checked my sights as I went using Navmatics' "Celestial" app for the Android OS. The majority of my sights had an error of about +0.2' with a maximum of +0.5'.

All in all, I found using a natural horizon much easier than an artificial one. The main problem I have with my Davis AH is that the glass/plastic wind screens tend to develop condensation quite rapidly resulting in my having to remove them to let them air out.

Hopefully I'll have more time tomorrow to maybe do a noon sight or even a 2 or 3 body fix.

    Regards,
    Sean C.
