Hello Wil, welcome aboard!
Some photos of this instrument can be seen here. http://www.freewebs.com/tedbrink1/greatbritain.htm#243257974
I am interested to see that the thing has radium in it! Mine certainly does not glow in the dark, so I guess radium was only added to some. A Google search will find you a manual and any amount of information on them, see for example http://www.scribd.com/doc/3856694/AstroCompass-Manual
They are meant for use on a levelled mount, so no good for sailboats I am afraid :-(

Hello. I'm a 'new member', having found my way to this site today. I have an interest in navigation and am following the guidance to make an initial post, so here goes....
Sitting on my desk is an 'A.M. astro compass MkII 6.A/1174 ( Section/reference ) which is closely similar to that illustrated in my copy of Bowditch 1962, p.626, Figure 2515.
I'd be pleased to add a couple of pics, but 'File attachments allowed from established NavList members only'......
My dusty old instrument has neither 'levels' - hence no 'lubber line' - nor 'astro-compass standard'baseplate. In other respects it seems 'all there'.
Should any member care to offer any guidance on if/how I might put this interesting device to some use, perhaps on my sailboat (!!)I'd be both intrigued and grateful.
Wil B.
