For all who use a reasonably recent version of Windows - and I guess that means most of us - there is a simple way to resize photos that does not involve addtional software or expertise.
If you can open photos in Microsoft Windows Picture Manager - its software that gets bundled with the operating system, and is thus the default way photos are opened in Windows - click on 'Edit Pictures' on the top bar.
Then click 'Resize'. Then you can enter a % in the box. Hint: the % at which the image is being displayed is shown at the top, and if that fits comfortably on your screen then that might be a size to consider.
Lastly, save this version of your pic with a different name, or you may lose the original high res version, which you may need, eg; for printing.
