    Thanks for making that distinction, Nicolàs.  I stand corrected, although suspect that: "For all who use a reasonably recent version of Windows" that "simple way to resize photos that
    does not involve additional software or expertise" may still be available, since most will use Office.

    Agree that this won't apply to everyone, and that the exceptions may need to find alternative methods.

    MWPM is not a part of the operating system, but of Microsoft Office
    (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_Picture_Manager). Not
    everyone is using Microsoft Office, but alternatives like OpenOffice
    etc. For those the free software tool IrfanView (www.IrfanView.com)
    might do the trick. The nice thing about IrfanView is that it can do
    batch conversions as well (so resizing multiple images in one go). Apart
    from resizing it will also allow you to save the image in a different
    format than the original.
