    Re accuracy of sextant sights at sea, if memory serves the instrument error in Plaths is supposedly not more than 12 seconds across the arc.

    Again, if memory serves, based on a reprint of a Plath manual I once came upon, it went on as follows, not an exact quote, but contains the general sense of the comment.

    On a small boat, with a sea running, forget sextant error, and concentrate on holding the horizon. The largest error is likely to be in/with the operator.
