John Rae commented- This is an interesting story. I have looked for Meeus formula 13.3, but have drawn a blank. The only copy of Meeus the local library seems to have is "Astronomical Formulae for Calculators, 4th Edition 1988". Perhaps I should be looking for another book? ==================== Response from George. Sorry, I should have made it clear. What you have is Meeus' original paperback. In that, the relevant formula is 8.3. Meeus' later work is his "Astronomical Algorithms", of which the first ed. was 1991, and I have 1998. In that, it's equation 13.3. The newer book includes almost all of the older one, with a lot of useful addition. I highly recommend it, to anyone interested in any sort of numerical astronomy. On some points, I still prefer the simpler treatment of his earlier book, though. George.
