What is the ugliest octant of them all ? I will nominate the Bendix Navy MK V bubble octant AN-5851-1. Clumsy and complicated making it very hard to love. I will endorse this instrument as a superior value because of good optics, filters, natural horizon and bubble horizon. Even John Letcher saw some virtues in the MK V for small craft blue water CN. After 5 years and thousands of observations I have grown to liking this beast. The big black box it comes in gets an F though. I use a canvas bag lined with foam for general carry.
